SYNOPSIS

Synopsis:   

Based on Louisa May Alcott’s life, Little Women follows the adventures of sisters, Jo, Meg, Beth and Amy March. Jo is trying to sell her stories for publication, but the publishers are not interested. Her friend, Professor Bhaer, tells her that she must do better and write more from herself. Begrudgingly taking this advice, Jo weaves the story of herself and her sisters and their experience growing up in Civil War America. Little Women embodies the complete theatrical experience, guaranteeing a night filled with laughter, tears and a lifting of the spirit. The powerful score soars with the sounds of personal discovery, heartache and hope – the sounds of a young America finding its voice. (description taken from mtishows.com/little-women)

  CASTING NOTES

 Actors performing the roles of Jo, Laurie, Meg, John, and Bhaer will be asked to participate in choreographed moments of intimacy. Please note that these moments will be choreographed within the actor’s boundaries. 

- Meg and John kiss (pg 60) and hug throughout the show. They marry. 

- Laurie kisses Jo on the lips; Jo pulls away (pg 64) 

- Jo and Bhaer kiss on the lips 2-3 times (pgs 113-114) 

PREPARATION:    

Required: Prepare a 32 bar cut from a song of your choice;  Provide music accompaniment on your device or provide YouTube link to use on our device. 

Encouraged: Contrasting monologues (60-90 seconds) The 4 March sisters and Laurie will not be separated between a young/old cast, so actors are encouraged to show their versatility to portray the age range of their character. 

Bring: Any conflicts for all dates from January 4-April 19th.  Include all unavailability all days (Sun-Sat)

Reading from the script and possibly light choreography will be part of the audition process. Please be prepared to stay the entire 2 hour audition. It is not necessary to attend both audition days, but you MUST be available for callbacks.

CHARACTERS  

CHARACTER BREAKDOWNS 

(The character descriptions indicate the age that the character should appear onstage and do not need to match the age of the performer.)

Marmee March/Hag: Marmee: The girls' mother. She is the strong backbone of the family, who is courageous despite the difficult odds she faces. Female/45 to 55/Eb3 – Eb5 

Hag: In Jo’s story; a wise hag who’s unseemly looks hide wisdom. 

Meg March/ Clarissa : Meg: The world-weary, yet hopeful, oldest sister who yearns for a great life. She marries John and has twins with him. Female/21-25/Bb3-B5  

Clarissa: The ingénue in Jo’s story; prone to fainting, sobbing dramatically, ultimately finds her courage. 

Jo March: Our story's protagonist. Passionate, adventurous, and brave. She has the idea of writing Little Women and eventually becomes engaged to Professor Bhaer. Female/18-23/E3-A5 : 

Beth March/ Roderigo II: Beth: The second youngest sister who tragically dies of Scarlet Fever. Peace-maker, lover, and an optimist who is always encouraging her sisters to dream. Female/17-21/G3-G5 : 

Roderigo II: In Jo’s story, the real hero, Clarissa’s long-lost sister in disguise. 

Amy March/Troll: Amy: The youngest, most energetic sister with a rather pompous air about her. She later marries Laurie. Female/14-18/F#3-Gb5 : 

Troll: In Jo’s story; your classic lives-under-the-bridge troll; hoards jewels and gems and makes bargains. 

Aunt March/Mrs. Kirk: Aunt March: A formidable, over-bearing matron and great-aunt to the March sisters. The wealthy socialite in town. Female/45 to 60/E3-F#5 : 

Mrs. Kirk: The New York boarding house proprietress that lodges Jo and Professor Bhaer. Irish, kindly, warm and motherly. (non-singing)

Mr. Laurence/Knight: Mr. Laurence: Laurie’s grandfather and the March Family neighbor. Gruff and hardened, but softens over the course of his friendship with the March’s, closest to Beth. Male/60-70/ C3–D4 : 

Knight: In Jo’s story; an elderly Knight who possesses the key to Clarissa’s destiny. 

Mr. John Brooke/Braxton: Mr John Brooke: Laurie's tutor and a rather stiff man; shows very little emotion. He later marries Meg and changes. Male/30 to 40/E3-G4 

Braxton: The villain in Jo’s story; classic mustache-twirling, dastardly fellow.

Laurie Laurence/Rodrigo: Laurie: The bright-eyed boy-next-door with considerable charm. He loves Jo but later falls in love with Amy. Male/18 to 23/Bb2-Bb4 : 

Roderigo: The hero in Jo’s story; handsome, saving-the-day with much bravado.

Professor Bhaer: German Professor* who exemplifies proper manners. He is a boarder in Mrs. Kirk's boarding house and eventually falls in love with Jo. Male/35-45/G2-G4 *Would prefer the actor to have a German accent.
