Directed by Gwen Mansfield
Director Notes:
This is a wacky, fun, colorful show. Shirley the Partridge is handed down the responsibility of assembling the participants for “The Song.” She discovers that treasured Christmas traditions can unexpectedly change when life throws surprises, some pleasant—some not. She finds it necessary to readjust, rewrite, and revise traditions. The reasons for celebrations stay the same, but the traditions might morph, evolve, or be turned upside down. And—it’s okay.
Two opportunities for auditions:
Kids. “A Blue-Moosling Might Be Just Fine.” A 15-minute playlet to introduce the main play. 3 kids needed.
Adults. The 12 Days of Christmas. The main show that follows the introductory playlet. 2m 3f adult actors needed.
Preparation:
Strongly suggest working on actor-audition-sides. There will be improv. There are no appointments needed.

Characters:
Auditions will be for two sections of the performance.
· Part 1—Pre-show Playlet. “A Blue-Hooved Mooseling Might Be Just Fine.” This is a 15- minute playlet with a small cast of children who explore the themes of the show.
o 3 cast members. While the script indicates gender with the character names, all the roles are interchangeable, depending on the actors auditioning. Character names can be changed. Cast includes: Two 8-to-11-year-olds. One older child/ pre-teen to high school. This playlet may be double cast.
o Come prepared. Be familiar with the attached script “A Blue-Hooved Mooseling Might Be Just Fine.” No need to memorize, but be able to easily read with expression. If you print the script, you may mark it and use it in the audition. Otherwise, a script will be provided.
o Must be able to sing on key and know the melody for “Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer.”
o Demonstrate a strong speaking voice that can reach the back of the theatre.
o Demonstrate excellent articulation. (The audience wants to hear every word!)
o Be willing to have fun and experiment!
·
Part 2 The 12 Days of Christmas
o 5 strong adult actors who are energetic, can play multiple comic characters, and can sing simple Christmas carols on key.
o 3 women, 2 men. Any age, with the exception of Shirley, the Partridge, who is younger than the rest.
o No monologue required.
o Improv may be part of the audition.
o Sides and casting grid attached. Follow the casting grid to know what roles apply to each actor. Be familiar with the sides.
o All actors play at least one bird. The author Katherine Applegate, in her middle school book Wishtree, described birds’ movements. “I love the way birds move, so unlike trees. We bend with the wind. We’re graceful and unhurried. Birds. on the other hand, move in flits and twitches. Their heads whip from side to side, as if they’ve just heard astonishing news.” Be prepared to show-off your best bird movements.
